Gifts to SAM and Yale Ensure Public Access to Exceptional Works. An exceptional collection of 20th century art assembled over a decade by late collectors Jane Lang Davis and Richard E. Lang will find permanent homes and be accessible to the public at the Seattle Art Museum and the Yale University Art Gallery.

The Friday Foundation, established to realize the Langs’ passion and philanthropy, today announced gifts of 19 masterworks and $10.5 million in dedicated funds to the Seattle Art Museum. In addition, the Friday Foundation announced a gift of six specifically chosen artworks to the Yale University Art Gallery.

A significant collection of 20th century art and dedicated funds will support the museum’s mission. The Seattle Art Museum (SAM) announced today that it has received a landmark gift of 19 artworks and $10.5 million in dedicated funds from the Friday Foundation, which celebrates the legacy of Seattle collectors Richard E. Lang and Jane Lang Davis. In little more than a decade, they assembled one of the most significant private collections of Abstract Expressionist paintings and sculptures, augmented by two towering artists of post-war Europe.

Friday Foundation donates works to Seattle Art Museum.

The Seattle Art Museum has announced a gift of nineteen Abstract Expressionist works from the collection of the late Richard E. Lang and Jane Lang Davis.

Made through the Friday Foundation, which owns the Langs' collection and is dedicated to celebrating the couple's legacy, the gift features sixteen paintings, one drawing, and two sculptures by a number of different artists, including Francis Bacon, Helen Frankenthaler, Alberto Giacometti, Philip Guston, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still. According to the Seattle Times, the works collectively are estimated by Sotheby's Americas to be worth $400 million.

Amazing, transformative gifts don’t come along often, but the Seattle Art Museum just landed one, and that means the entire city, region and state are the beneficiaries.

The gift comes from the collection of the late Jane Lang Davis and Richard E. Lang. The Medina residents were avid collectors. The foundation tasked with carrying on their philanthropic work after their deaths has decided to keep 19 of their most important pieces close to home.
